Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritages: Miao Embroidery

According to the known history, the ancestors of the Miao Nationality burned all the documents and files in fire to escape from the wars and they did not keep anything for their characters. Therefore, they used the method of embroidery to promote communication and recording events, and they recorded what had happened on their clothes by colorful threads. This unique culture is regarded as "wearing history books". We wanted to demonstrate the Chinese intangible cultural heritage through an application, show the beautiful pictures decoration of Miao embroidery and paraphrase the historical stories contained in the pictures, and display the Miao culture melted in the pictures to the audiences all over the world, enabling them to experience the rich and unique cultural charms of the Chinese minority nationalities.

Research

1. Background Research

There are 55 minority nationalities in China, every minority nationality has its own unique culture, and the Miao embroidery culture of Miao nationality is one of the most distinctive minority cultures. According to the known history, the ancestors of the Miao Nationality burned all the documents and files in fire to escape from the wars and they did not keep anything for their characters. Therefore, they used the method of embroidery to promote communication and recording events, and they recorded what had happened on their clothes by colorful threads. This unique culture is regarded as "wearing history books". It is also one of the most important Chinese intangible cultural heritages.

The target users are the group of people who are older than 18 and like folk and traditional crafts. We conducted a user investigation and research and collected a large quantity of user data for analysis. The people who had heard about Miao embroidery occupied 25% of the total respondents, and the other 75% of the people did not know about it.

67.7% people have positive and good impressions of Miao embroidery, and the largest portion of these impressions is colorful and delicate, then special meanings contained, beautiful colors, curiosity, and the smallest portion is the tradition of the Miao nationality. 35.3% people have negative Impressions of Miao embroidery, having no feelings about it,just so so and boring.

Through the analysis of data, 45% people want to learn about the production process of Miao embroidery, 30% people want to know everything about It, 18% people would like to learn about the classic pictures, and 7% people prefer to learn the local conditions and customs.

With the analysis of data, 52.5% people hope that this APP can help them to increase knowledge, 27.5% people want the entertainment function, and 20% people prefer to have both of the above two functions.

User Persona:

To culminate our research findings, we synthesized one distinct persona. Someone is an independent art curator. She from United States of America and worked in Ullens Center of China.

Basic Information: Sara worked as an independent art curator in Beijing ULLens center. She likes Chinese culture a lot especial the tradition culture. She love to read and she has a lot personal time which she love to spend on explore Chinese traditional culture.

When she traveled to guizhou province in 2013, She feel love with Miao embroidery, local people in guizhou province told her the history and show her the design of Miao embroidery. So she loves Miao embroidery's design and the historical stories contained in the pictures. Because her jobs she can have a lot of personal time so she love to go to library to read book about Miao embroidery. But there are not a lot of books about Miao embroidery especially in English. So it's  hard for her to learn more about Miao embroidery.

Concept 

I hope this APP makes it possible to demonstrate Miao embroidery in the following 2 aspects:

1. The introduction to Miao embroidery, including the profile of Miao embroidery, the general production procedures, and a brief introduction to stitches.

2. The interpretation of "a history book on clothes", and the demonstration of the interpretation

of stories and histories included in Miao embroidery pictures.

This is a story happened during the migration of the Miao people, the divine beast in the forest helped them to fly across the Yellow River. 

The users can enter Into the story module of Miao embroidery by clicking the right Miao embroidery picture, including the origins of the Miao embroidery pictures and the historic contents and stories in these pictures.

The users can turn round the pictures to switch to the sample of another Miao embroidery.

Click the functional button in the hidden files to get the menu.

If the users touch the pictures, the graphic pictures will silghtly vibrate. It allows the interaction with users, which strengthens the entertainment.

The complete static original picture can be pulled to the right side, and be magnified for more detailed appreciation.

Some representative smaples of Miao embroidery are selected for dynamic exhibition, the users can read the illustration words and interact with the demonstrated pictures, and pull the big pictures on the left for a detailed observation and learning about the stories in the pictures.

It is the Introduction to Miao embroidery. A rotating wheel disc is applied to demonstrate the history, the production methods and the unique stitches of Miao embroidery.

The Production Process

There are 5 steps to produce a piece of Miao embroidery:

1. pattern samples and pasting them; 2. fixing embroidery frames;

3. matching threads;

4. embroidering;

5. glue edge suture. Each and every step is demonstrated through both animation and words.

Introduction to Stitches

The Miao embroidery stitches make the works different from other embroideries, the Miao embroidery stitches include embroidering, sticking, binding, spraying, doing, stringing, and pricing. The variations of the stitches are displayed through both words and pictures.
